Lancaster Bike Night East Kirkby

by Roy and Chris

I had a great ride to the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire; good weather and plenty of other riders making their way there made it a pleasant trip. This is a very popular bike night. The star exhibit of the Centre is “Just Jane”, a Lancaster bomber which does taxi runs.

There was a raffle, and if you got lucky you could win a place in the aircraft for a taxi ride on the night. Another raffle gave you the chance of winning two tickets to see some British Superbike Bike racing.

Talking to one of the organisers I was told that the attendance was over 1,000 bikes, so there was plenty to wander around and look at. This year’s attendance was slightly better than in August of last year. The Centre holds two bike nights a year and both are well attended.

The food outlets were busy, especially the NAAFI, where the staff were kept on their toes. Walking amongst the motorbikes I spotted a very nice Yamaha XS 750;

this make and model was the first machine to pull my sidecar around, and the longest trips that it went on were a couple of rides to Barcolena. Chris rode it a fair amount on these runs, but she preferred to ride on the straighter roads, leaving the twisty bits to me!!

Music was supplied by “Last Chance”, a band of four guys really enjoying themselves, and they kept belting out the 60’s and 70’s classic pop and rock tunes – they were good.

The local scooter club of which I am a member turned up in force also having had a dry ride; it was nice to see them there and it all helped to swell the numbers and possibly get the Lancaster back into the skies again. The plane fired up its Merlin engines and cruised around the field. This is a very popular moment and lots of photos were taken. The sound of those engines is really magic!! At the end of the run the Lancaster stops in front of the crowd and they really rev those engines hard.

Well done to the Centre for another successful evening – there’s always plenty to see and do here. I look forward to next year,
