The Irish Shindig.
report and pictures by Wheels members Dickie and Jenny

Friday morning was nice and bright as Ozzy rode up the drive ready for an early start for the trip up the A5 to Holyhead. A fuel and smoke stop at Shrewsbury, then on to Betws Coed for breakfast at the station cafe. A grey sky met us as we rode over the top to Bangor but it stayed dry all the way to the port.

Harley Outfit

Once on the ferry we headed to the onboard cafe for more food (very expensive) and a cuppa, then sat outside for the rest of the crossing enjoying the sunshine. Sat Nav wanted me to go thro' Dublin but knowing what the city was like we decided to pay the toll (6 Euros) and use the port tunnel to get out of the docks and straight to the ring road. We arrived at the Shindig site an hour later to be met by Mert, the organiser, who got us to register and gave us all the info on the weekend schedule plus a limited edition sticker.

Glendalough Monastic Site

Irish: Glendalough (Gleann Dá Loch, meaning "Glen of Two Lakes")-- webmaster Sid

The rally field was across a rickety bridge, but luckily there was another vehicle entrance back up the road. Tents were put up, kettle was boiled and Chris Scanlon, from the Wirrel, rode in having been out for a ride out. A few more turned up including Bob and Helen with some dutch friends, and those in the log cabins came over for a chat. It was nice to see the crowd from Belfast again, and the Limerick crew came over to insult me, as usual. Most people went to the pub just up the road for dinner but Ozzy and me decided to cook at the tent, as it was such a lovely evening. Mert had told us the pub was only 5 mins up the road although it was up a little hill. Little it wasn't, short and steep is what it was.

The run-out at Glendalough Monastic Site

Having taken 5 mins to recover the hill climb we took position at the bar and ordered the black stuff (when in Ireland etc), then some more and some more until around ten’ish the guitars came out and a good old sing song took place, with locals and tourists, all joining in. We had the full gambit from "Paddys Sick Note" to "Fields of Athenrye". What a brilliant night and the Limerick crew insulted me some more, just to make sure I wasn't feeling neglected. We all descended the hill, some linking arms singing the Wizard of Oz on the way down, sometime after 2am all feeling very happy.

The camping field.

The mad Irish lot.

Martyn said, yes, especially the one on the left as you look at the picture and the little short one on the right comes in at a close second.

He wishes you all the best and hope to see you sometime. Hold a Shindig in the school holidays and Martyn and Lesley will be there.

Up early sat morning for the run out at 10:30. A lovely ride throu' the Wicklow mountains up to the Wicklow Gap (top of the pass) then down to the Curragh around some lovely lanes. Once in the Curragh, Mert had organised a lunch stop at a country house hotel. Soup, loads of bread rolls and as much tea and coffee as you liked, all for 6 euros.

Newbridge Silverware Factory

Once we had all been fed and watered off to Newbridge Silverware for a look around the factory shop and their Hollywood Icon Museum. Mert had arranged for us to park right outside the main entrance and the local paper came to do a photo shoot. Back to the campsite through the mountains again to get back in time for prize giving at the pub later that night.

Run-out lunch stop.

Long distance went to a Dutch couple on a red BMW K / EZS, best oufit, chosen by Merts uncle Tom, was given to a lovely BMW / EZS rally. After the usual thank yous another session of black stuff and singing took place, this time only to 01:45 then off down that hill again to get some shut eye.

Best Outfit

There was 19 outfits in total, 2 Dutch, 5 English, some Northern outfits and a good few southern outfits making for a lovely mix of lingo's. I must thank Mert and his family, for doing such a grand job, finding such a good site and looking after us all so very well.

The Limerick crew go for easy camping.

Thanks too to the Limerick crew who provided the guitars and in tune singing (unlike the rest of us) and finally thanks to Billy the local who had Patrick and me in stitches for ages on sat evening.
